Oi Oi skinbyrds,
It's been an absolutely crazy year since my last blog update and I can't believe I left it so long. The e-zine was on the back-burner through this time.
I went through a terrible break-up and took a long time to heal and put the pieces back together. I'm with a wonderful new man, have finally started my band, and things are going great.
Now that my personal life is back on track, I've got some energy again to focus on this e-zine. Recent events have also reminded me of why I started it in the first place.
This e-zine was started to provide a safe space of support, inspiration and a community-within-a-community for skinhead women. As much as I love the skinhead culture, there is very much an element of a "boys club" in this subculture in which when a woman stands up for herself, she is ganged up on and bullied in to submission. There is a lot of sexism levelled against us also that goes un-challenged and accepted.
It's time for us to stand tall and refuse to tolerate this mentality. It is time for us to take the respect that we deserve and it is time that we stopped tolerating the sexist jokes and put-downs. It is time for us to demand that our worth, value and contribution to this subculture be recognised. It is time to drop the egos that cause all the in-fighting, and work on supporting each other as a world-wide tribe and building the scene - locally AND globally - in to something beautiful, strong and something to be very proud of.
So ladies, let's get together to get this e-zine off the ground. Let's use the facebook group and e-zine as a central meeting point to give each other inspiration, celebrate our differences, and help each other to build up our strengths.
